Portugal 2026: A Team to Watch Out this World Cup

The World Cup is nearing and so is everyone’s focus on the top football players – especially the ageless Cristiano Ronaldo. Over the last decade, the Portugal national team has largely been a one-man show. With the retirement of several players in the last decade, the Portuguese team now boasts of fresh blood and tactical versatility.

When we talk about the perfect modern goalkeeper, we not only talk about a player who is great in diving and reflexes but also someone who is exceptional with the feet. Here, Diogo Costa emerges as one of the top options for the Portuguese side. Apart from him, there is the experienced Rui Patricio.

Defending is one of the departments in which we normally look at other nations. Italy have always been a fortress. The German, Spanish and French side all have formidable defenders but this time, Portugal has joined the pack with the solid left and left-centre back pairing of Ruben Dias and Nuno Mendes. Arguably, Nuno Mendes might be considered the best left-back in the world. The number 25 for PSG has been in a stellar form over the last two years proving himself to be on top of every attack. On the right side, there is Matheus Nunes and Joao Cancelo – the latter of whom has emerged as a powerhouse for his club, Barcelona.

Midfielders are known to dictate the speed and overall flow of the game. When we talk about the Spanish side winning the World Cup in 2010, we notice some big names in the midfielding department like Xavi, Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, Sergio Busquets etc. Likewise, the Portuguese team this time stands as a midfield powerhouse. Paul Scholes, one of the greatest midfielders of the 2000s named Vitinha as one of his Top 5 footballers. As a midfielder, Vitinha has been instrumental in bringing Paris Saint-Germain their first Champions League trophy. Apart from him, there is the young Joao Neves who is ever-present with his relentless work rate. Bernardo Silva is another proven brain in the mix, along with Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Neves and the veteran Renato Sanches.

Cristiano Ronaldo has always been known as the sole talismanic head in the Portuguese national team but this time, the 41-year-old has the support of Rafael Leao and the in-form Pedro Neto in the wings. Goncalo Ramos has also been a proven second striker for PSG and the national team in many occasions. Apart from them, the Portuguese team has options with formidable names like Joao Felix, Fabio Silva and Goncalo Guedes. All in all, the Portuguese side this time would present themselves as one of the dark horses to look out for.
